Biography

I joined the Department of Plant Pathology at Kansas State University in 1982. My graduate degree was in Nematology from the Department of Plant Pathology at Oklahoma State University.

Research

Strategies for durable resistance in soybean to Heterodera glycines; management of nematode diseases in corn and wheat; population and community ecology of soil nematodes; soil biodiversity; sentinel taxa of ecosystem disturbance.

Teaching

I teach/co-teach four courses in the the Department of Plant Pathology:

Plant Nematology (PLPTH 730) is an introduction to the morphology, taxonomy, and ecology of phytoparasitic and free-living nematodes found in plants, soil, and fresh water. Emphasis is on the identification and control of plant parasitic nematodes and on lab techniques used in their study.
Plant Resistance to Pests (PLPTH 732) introduces students to the basic concepts of the biology, genetics, and breeding for pest resistance in plants.
Plant Resistance to Diseases (PLPTH 755) emphasizes the evaluation of conventional and novel strategies for obtaining durable resistance to plant diseases using three pathosystems (cereal rusts, rice blast, and soybean cyst nematode) that historically have been difficult to manage.
Ecology and Epidemiology of Plant Pathogens (PLPTH 905) acquaints students with experimental and theoretical approaches to the study of plant disease ecology in agricultural and natural systems.
